welcome to tucson!

So yesterday morning I arrived in Phoenix, bright and squirrelly and sleep deprived, but ready for a joyful gathering! I am usually bored by play-by-play event postings, so I will try instead to summarize via theme:FOOD.We have been provided food by Joanne and her family, a woman of great power and love. It is amazing what good food, or the promise of good food, contributes to a gathering; and Joanne has made UH-MAZE-ING food. Pasta with homemade tomato sauce, sausage to add if you are a meaty person, polenta with basil. Snack food like you wouldn't believe. Right now, soup is simmering in crockpots, waiting for whenever we're ready for a break in talking about oppression so that we can fill our bellies. What kind of gathering would this be without such awesome food in such abundance? How distracted would I be right now, unable to concentrate, if I didn't know when and where lunch was coming from? How do we value food in our society, and the preparers of it? They are providing a service, such an essential service (thank yourself if you provide your own self with food!), allowing us to function and gather and share. Thank you, Joanne, for the beautiful spread.Relatedly, hospitality, people who are willing to open their houses and their cars (and their libraries!) for us to get together and share and bond. We are right now talking about resources and survival and privilege, and just the fact that I can be here, in this room (in ANY room), talking about these things? We are so privileged to even be able to be having this conversation. How do we expand the privilege so others can have these conversations?ANTI-OPPRESSION.The Four I's, the Triangle, and the Web are just the beginning (and now that I've done the 4 I's four times, I think I finally have a handle on it). If you don't take it home with you and look at it, and look at how it applies to yourself, and try to make it influence your behavior, then you've never got past the starting gun. What are the ways in which I perpetuate privilege, perpetuate materialism, and perpetuate the slumber of the masses, perpetuate the distraction (I work in the hospitality industry, so the answer: a lot. Maybe I will do a 4 I's exercise on my hotel and who can stay there). Does your 501(c)3 status help you break down oppression or help perpetuate it without your knowledge? The world needs help, and the world is broken. But I am part of the world, and I reflect its brokenness. I will help myself break free of it.Time for lunch. More later!See More

rocky mountain regional gathering (mach 2)

Thumbnail
Hello Fight With Tools Denver! Tis I, your trusty Rocky Mountain Regional rep. The Regional Gathering (Nov 6-7 in Tucson) is fast approaching! There are still some details we're ironing out, but it will be Friday night and all day Saturday. If you're planning on attending, you NEED to RSVP in the events section. We are trying to find food and beds for everyone and in order to do this, we need a headcount.Additionally, there seem to be several people attending from the Denver/Colorado area. Would somebody (not me) be willing to organize carpooling? Or can we use this discussion for...er...a carpooling discussion?I hope to see you all in November! Please message me with any questions or concerns. We really hope that as many people as possible can attend.-becca (hemenwaykid)See More

introducing...me!

I am, rather belatedly, accepting Micro-Challenge 001, and introducing myself on this-here bloggything. Even though my profile is actually pretty complete when it comes to letting you know what it is that's important to me.I am idealistic to the point of being gullible or delusional...I guess that to me, one of the most important things, one of the things I want to be able to change, is that I think everybody in this world has a place, a niche, somewhere they can fit in and be happy and be productive. Some people have an easy time finding their place. Some people never find it. But it's always out there.I think we as humans, we as a society, need to change the way we talk to each other and about each other. I think we need to redefine our relationships with each other. I'm not talking about everybody agreeing all the time--I don't think that's possible or even desirable--but there has to be a way that even people who disagree with each other can work together and respect each other."Thinking too well of people often allows them to behave better than they otherwise would." --Nelson Mandela"The most powerful activists in the world are the ones who are unashamedly themselves." --Peterson Toscano"A revolutionary organisation must always remember that its objective is not getting people to listen to speeches by expert leaders, but getting them to speak for themselves." --Raoul Vaneigem, "The Revolution of Everyday Life"The revolution can be found in music, can be found in religion, can be found in families. But all of those things are so often used to enforce the status quo, not upend it. It's a constant back and forth. I'm interested in taking the things we use to prop up our society and using those same things to create a new one. A new way of thinking, a new way of being. We need it desperately.See More

Highlander Session - Part 2! at Flobots.org Community Collective

Thumbnail
August 17, 2009 from 6pm to 8:30pm
The Highlander Session idea has been floating around Denver this summer, evolving. After this session on the 17th, we will be breaking into small groups of 4-6 to share whatever versions of our life stories we wish to share with the group. It will be up to individual groups to determine their own structure and schedule.During this session on the 17th, we will practice this process in a larger group setting, as Josh and I have agreed to share our stories that night. The current hope is that we can grow, individually and collectively, as we learn to speak and listen with each other about our lives. All are welcome and encouraged to participate. We will practiceSelf reflection: What is the story of my life?Story telling: How do I want to present my experiences to others?Listening to understand: How can I contribute to atrusting and healthy environment? Trusting and healthy relationships? If you have not yet been to a Highlander Session, but plan to participate, it will be helpful for you to watch this hour long interview Amy Goodman did with folk singer, Utah Phillips. It's an hour of stories, and to watch it is to sit beside an elder who would love what we are doing. Many of us have watched this together, and discussed it; it's part of the impetus and context for our Highlander Sessions. Please watch it if you have the means:http://www.democracynow.org/2009/1/1/placeholder_utah_phillipsAlso, if you're interested, some information on what used to be the Highlander Folk School, and is now the Highlander Research and Education Center in the state of Tennessee: http://www.highlandercenter.org/about.aspSee More

About Me
Let's see. I live in Denver, duh. I write zines but never remember to xerox them and share them with people. I ride my bike everywhere, unless it snows, and then I take the bus. I am a Quaker, and when I was 14, I got into the punk and ska scene, in part (I think) because there's a lot of overlap between punk values and Quaker values. I tend to be really shy and reclusive. I would like to be optimistic, but the world is really disappointing, so being cynical hurts less. Not being in high school anymore is probably one of the best things ever. I don't put milk on my Cheerios or in my coffee. I think that sometime this year, I need to do some fingerpainting.
How I would like to change the world:
I am secretly building a time machine to go back and change the results of the 2000 election.
Tools I Have
I have a Leatherman, my hands, and the willingness. And my bicycle.
Tools I Need
I need people to check up on me and hold me accountable and get my reclusive little ass out of the house.
Favorite Bands
Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Bouncing Souls, Flobots, the Clash, Flogging Molly, H2O, the Gossip, Le Tigre, Sleater-Kinney, Patti Smith, Street Dogs, Dropkick Murphys, early Motown singles, Strike Anywhere, the Mad Caddies, the Specials, etc etc.

Hey Becca!
It was great to finally meet you on Thursday!
I'm probably gonna go to the Boulder show on Friday, my sister was supposed to go to a flobots show a while ago so I think it's finally time. :) So maybe I'll see you there.

Hi Becca! 2 things:
1) You're busy this Sunday evening, correct? I think we're going to have another Highlander Session meeting then, and I know you're busy on Sundays...I just wanted to be sure. I still want to try to get everyone else together who didn't make the last meeting and can't come this Sunday, so let me know when you have 2 hours in the coming week - Monday through Sunday. Thanks!

2) Can you make the DST meeting on the 13th? Can we hear from you about national stuff then? Let me know what you think! :)
