I agree about community unity and I think that in order to move "beyond race" we have to recognize that the system of oppression IS race based and that Chicano and Latino people (and people of color) are targeted by these systems in a way, as a white person, I am not. I have found that when I show up consistently to events and support my brothers and sisters I learn a lot about why tensions exist and at the same time just being there reduces tension in the community and shows there is a way to do things together.
Because of the extra oppression the communities of color face, if many of us who go to the march are white, it also raises the likelihood that the march will not be attacked. IN other words if we show up for our community and our brothers and sisters of color, it assists in creating a safe space for their voices to be heard, breaks down barriers and tensions in the community. I don't know... maybe I am rambling? Does this make any sense???
Especially on myspace...bands from CO too.
I figure they can pass on the word too, you know?
