You said, "all of the most important stuff i learn right at home in books or from listening to older people pass on lessons." I can really relate. ! I got out of college..after having been in school for 19 or so years, and I went to a place in rural Georgia called Jubilee Partners. It's an intentional community that's been there, working with people who are refugees, since 1979. I could talk about the things I learned in that place with the people who were there with me...forever. It was a stark contrast to college - I mean, I had a good experience in college, and really, I was happy in school my whole life. I didn't know enough to be critical of it until it was over..so you're ahead of me there; you have already started to seek out the people you want to learn from and ask questions when things don't seem right to you.
Who or what in your life has taught you to think critically and creatively?
The best advice I have is that you try to convince them to talk to veterans that have already been to Iraq and hear thier story. If they are in or around Denver I would be more than happy to sit with them in person. Other wise The best thing for them to do is talk to someone that has been there.
Also There is a book called MY WAR KILLING TIME IN IRAQ. by Colby Buzzell. I highly recommend anyone that is joining the military to read this book. It offers alot of clear common sense advice in plain language.
What we need to do is get as many people like you from your age group to get out there communicating to your generation. In my extensive experience with your generation I've found that most your peers are easily swayed by the views, actions (behavioral), and ridicule of their peers. They're just kinda running amok. Essentially, most of the people your age age heavily influenced by their peers....for better or worse. That's why we need people of your generation in the front lines that can communicate the revolution to your generation.
We need to help your people to gain a sense of purpose, responsibility, and self-respect.
"We need heroes.
we need heroes
Build them
Don’t put your fist up
Fill them
With our hopes and our hearts and our hands
We’re the architects of our last stand"-YouKnowWho
Many if not most of the heroes of this revolution will have to come from your generation if it is to have any real measure of success, as, the world will eventually be in *your* hands.
Theres a large number of us on this site that are either still enlisted, or former enlisted that would be more than happy to assist you. I will gather together what I can.
The other people you could talk to are Dan from Progressive Veterans, or anyone in that group (just search for the group Progressive Veterans). They would have a plethora of information to help you.
I should have you more information by the end of the week.
