FAQ about Music and Arts Mentoring Program
The goal of the Music and Arts Mentorship Program is to create a system of arts education that is self sustained by local musicians, artists, lyricists, and producers. Local artists have a unique power to shape their local communities through the highly visible and influential nature of their work. We have created a format where local artists can donate their time to benefit youth through instruction and mentoring. Every city has something different to offer the next generation of artists.
Becoming a mentor is just one of the many ways you can volunteer time to enrich your local community through service and donation. Check out this site for other volunteer opportunities.
What will I be doing as a musical mentor?
All of the mentors will volunteer in their area of expertise. Formats of teaching may include but are not limited to private or group instrument instruction, studio production, songwriting sessions, lyrics classes, drawing and painting. To see examples of some of the mentoring that is happening at The Denver Children's Home, please visit flobots.org to see the video.
Who are the students that I will be mentoring?
At risk youth ages 12-18 that do not have the resources or opportunity to take part in private or group arts programs. The students have been identified through individual application, youth outreach organizations, public schools, and other charitable foundations.
Who can volunteer to be a music mentor?
Any local artists who performs and/or teaches regularly in city that has an established street team can become a mentor. Interested participants should fill out a volunteer application. Artists of all disciplines should apply. All genres, instruments, producers, lyricists, poets, visual artists. We are not yet accepting applications for mentors in dance or drama.
Where does the mentoring take place?
The students and the mentors will conduct all sessions in the flobots.org community space in Denver at 2705 Larimer St. and in approved schools and community centers.
What is my commitment as a musical mentor?
Each mentor should initially commit to one or two hours per week for an four month period. A strong relationship will be created with the student through weekly or bi-weekly meetings. The sessions will conclude with a culminating event such as a performance, recording, or art display.
All mentors will be part of a local street team at the time mentoring begins and attend a “wake up” session in your city to join.
Mentors will also attend an orientation to discuss program mission and goals, mentor-mentee relationships, specific instructional methods and site related logistics.
What should I do if I am interested?
Email serafin@flobots.org to receive an application via email. We will send you the application and a short questionnaire via email to complete and return. We are creating a database of interested mentors and their area of expertise to match with students that enter the program.

Anyways, at the Flobots.org open house, I believe that I heard Laura mention that she wants to start doing small music events for kids in our own backyard. Do you know anything about that? If so, I'd love to help and I have a lot of DPS connections!
