Founded in Florida and currently based out of Philadelphia, PA, our purpose at Artists Making Hope is to reach out to disadvantaged children and make them feel special, loved and cared about. We are a humanitarian organization that aids children around the globe who have either lost their families or have been affected by poverty, epidemic, natural disaster, human trafficking, economic/political turmoil or other crises.
Recovery from such extreme hardships must be met not only with government aid, vital health supplies and generous donations, but also with love. We believe that every child is special and deserves to be happy, regardless of circumstance. Although time and donations should first go toward other broad organizations supplying life preserving and sustaining supplies and care (i.e. American Red Cross), we believe that children have other equally important ancillary and supplemental needs to affirm each of them of their independent value as a unique stitch in the fabric of the world.
Crisis can have substantial, detrimental consequence on the emotional health of youth. Monetary donations, although mandatory and greatly appreciated, can not reach children on the level that a handmade, unique gift made especially for that one child can. Our creative gifts are intended to make each child feel valuable and necessary while also providing emotional support. Those who have taken a general psychology course will attest to the stability (usually soft) objects offer children in times of need!
In psychoanalysis, the familiar toys, blankets and even pets we grew attached to as children are called transitional objects. A famous example would be the blanket attached to Linus' hip from the popular comic/cartoon "Peanuts" by Charles Schultz. These objects, our Buddies, offer children stability, support and friendship. They are an outlet for stress and emotion with patients ears always ready to listen and a soft body to hug in times of need. Studies have shown that children experiencing stress who are unable to self comfort and who do not have the appropriate family members or professionals to work with teaching them how to cope often become withdrawn, develop negative behavioral patterns and experience a downward trajectory in mental and emotional health.
Our Buddies not only offer the immediate gratification of receiving a personal, unique gift, but they go much further as therapeutic transitional objects. Please join us in our mission to aid children affected by crises by offering them the support of a patient, cuddly friend!
How I would like to change the world:
Currently:
The devastating earthquake that struck Haiti has left MANY THOUSANDS wounded, separated from family, and in despair. Artists Making Hope is an artists’ organization that focuses on aiding the emotional effects that devastating crises can have on children worldwide.
During the months of February and March of 2010 we will be having weekly doll making events ending in a 24 hour doll making marathon! Donated materials will be used to make unique Buddies to be sent out as a care package courtesy of American Airlines to the many Haitian children in need of special friends.

WOW that is beautiful what you are doing it is great that you have such a big heart and put it to work. So here is a site where you can recruit new members and spread your cause. I encourage you to use this as a resource. Besides that I ask you to contact me whenever you have any concerns or issues. Thank You and Welcome to FWT!!!
Sherise, Glad to see you checked out FWT.org and became a member. I hope being here helps you and Artists Making Hope reach every child in need. Good Luck, and let me know if you need anything. I'll keep an eye out for a place for your storage and workshop. Have you thought of checking out Girard College. When I was there picking up t-shirts for MLK Day, they had a huge gym that was just being used for storing the shirts. Might have potential.
