My community, Bard College at Simon's Rock is a ghost town. Not in the way that movies of America's "Old West" depict, we are not haunted by phantasms or specters. We are plagued by something much more vile, something much more enduring and tragic; there is a cloud of apathy that hangs around my campus, one that fogs up the minds of the student body.

I'm here in Denver reporting on local African communities, and I recently had the chance to meet with a former slave from Sudan named Francis Bok. He is now an anti-slavery activist and wrote a book about his life. If you get the chance, find his book at the library. It's called Escape from Slavery: The True Story of My Ten Years in Captivity and My Journey to Freedom in America. He's a remarkable dude.
