Sorry I haven't been around for a while. Been busy with a project. I'm still interested in helping in whatever way I can. I'll have much more free time in a few weeks...

The first is a project by the Just Seeds and IVAW

Ira is talking about this project but they have yet to find a space.

Local artist involvement would be cool.  Can you link the info here for those two separate exhibits?  I have a well-known local artist I can contact who may be interested, or may be able to point me to someone else who would be interested, but I need more info.

I'm familiar with AFSC.  I've attended a couple of events in the freezing cold with them, and am on their mailing list.

I'll see if I can find a large enough gallery, but I'm sure Ira is already working on this, and may already have a venue.

Regarding the one-off exhibit- I have a few galleries in mind that have floor to ceiling windows, which I think is important.  What size is that exhibit?

Also for the second exhibit and likely the first there is an opportunity for contributions by local artists.  It would be great to see a focused effort in our own area to display talent.

Sounds great!  I would love to do a show in KC if you want to try your hand at networking. I also know that AFSC (one of the groups I referenced in KC) is planning to bring an Afghanistan collaborative exhibit sometime in the spring.  It consists of 40-50 4'x10' panels by various artists depicting images of support for the country and its people.  It has been shown in major cities across the East coast.  I have begun looking for a space for it as well in this community but if you can think of some places that can facilitate such large work let me know, I can give some people a call.

Ok, I see what you mean.  For a minute there, I thought you were referring to some particular group that was about to make a big move or something.

I'm very interested in any Vet groups that are pro-peace/anti-war.  For most of us, we've grown up with war in our lives.  It's almost to a point where people tend to ignore it, due to the commonness of it all.

Please keep me posted on the potential one-off art exhibit traveling from Chicageo.  I'm familiar with many galleries here in KC, and am very interested in this idea.

I have just been been approved by examiner.com to write about activism in Kansas City.  Among the other great things I could write about, it would be great to write about this group in the future...

If a group could come about from this website, it would be a good addition to the work already happening out there is what I meant.

I have also worked with LRP, KC Task Force, and still keep in touch with American Friends Service Committee.  Typically the work they have done has been in a similar vein and depends on what you call one off type activism.  I'm really interested in the work of groups like the Catholic Workers at Cherub Brook and community building and sustaining focus.  I've met some gentlemen with Veterans for Peace in KC but have yet to meet with them regularly.

Thanks for the reply BaneMaler. I'm interested more in contacting existing groups, which is why I posted here when I found this. Your work with Iraq Vets Against the War has definite parallels to my work in Kansas City. I do have a small network of people I know through email mostly, but I'm also connected to the art world a bit, and the prospect of linking activist to artists is something that excites me. If nothing else, I would be down for organizing a one-off exhibit... or at least finding a space to host the art you mention.

Can you expound on your statement, "I have been successful [sic] keeping up with the few groups that I know about in Kansas City that promote peace and have been hoping to see more activity from another front."?

I'm aware of a group or two that is focused on peace [or can also be seen as anti-war]. But what other front are you referring to?

I'm really not interested in anything political, because I don't see that as a real solution. [I had a brief flirtation with LRP during their End the Fed period, but haven't been involved since.] Rather, logical discussion and realistic plans of action get me going. Political change is usually only temporary... I find the real change begins with you and I, and works its way out to those we come into contact with.

If anyone else is interested, reactivate yourselves and become a part of the conversation again...

I have found Kansas City to be a difficult place to organize in not living in the city myself but honestly, this is your all's city. If you want to begin to be the change you want to see in it you have to strategize to get with groups that are already doing the work and build from there. What do we want the focus of whatever group sprouts to be about? Should it support the causes of others or create something unique onto itself? One is obviously more time consuming than the other. I have been successful keeping up with the few groups that I know about in Kansas City that promote peace and have been hoping to see more activity from another front.
Pnomad, thanks for shaking the dust off this network. If you want to work with people here, you might have to encourage a discussion of what you would like to/see and suggests some meetings as hard as b something like that might be. I think we need a lot more participation this time from people in the city. Last time I believe most of the participation was from people like myself here in Kansas. Do you have a network of people that are already doing work that would be interested in connecting with this group and linking artists to activists?
Right now I am working rather heavily with Iraq Vets Against the War and their campaign to end the deployment of traumatized troops, a subject that I have brought to the city on various occasions in the last couple months. We also have a tour that is looking to ramp back up called "White Flag Warriors" that has had a lot of success here in Kansas at the major Universities. We have been fortunate to have some great participation from local vets like Ethan McCord who was captured in the now notorious Wikileaks footage "Collateral Murder", tell his story along with talented bicyclists from Fayetteville, AR with "Ride Till The End". It is something that we plan to bring to Columbia, MO early next year and are still looking for hosts in Kansas City. It is essentially a place for veterans to tell their story while introducing the campaign to end trauma deployments. We are also working on bringing an art exhibit from Chicago to Lawrence in February but could also do a one off show while the team is down here in KC if there is an interest in that kind of work.
Let me know if you are interested in organizing a Fight With Tools chapter in KC, we can certainly promote the work on the college campus' out here as an ally org.
