Propaganda is one of the most important creations of war. For example, the only reason communism is bad is because we're told it is. Before WWII, there was a highly respected communist political party. In fact, communism is one of the most efficient forms of government, but once a population is high enough, it can;t work, due to mass rebellion, also once it's big enough, capitalist countries see them as a threat. But this discussion isn't about communism its about propaganda, of course. The greatest form of propaganda is music, often in the form of a government related statement. These include Anti-Flag, Rage Against The Machine, and of course, Flobots. In its simplest form, propaganda is a parent raising their child in their image. Again, in WWII, we are told that Japan sneak attacked Pearl Harbor. They did, but what you probably didn't know is that weeks before the attack, we cut oil supply from Japan reducing them to a 10% supply of what they had, simply because we told them to stop gaining military size and they didn't. I believe propaganda is no longer avoidable. It is even in TV commercials, in some way. The only thing to do is to choose what propaganda you are subjected to, and follow it.

It is propaganda that makes the American population thinks that all Middle-Easterners are evil and that the current condition is the former. it is propaganda that teaches us to hate. and we are told that eveything that is slightly different then us is deserving of our hate
"propaganda aims less at modifying personal opinions than at leading people into action. This is clearly its most striking result: when propaganda intervenes in public opinion, it transforms the public into an acting crowd or, more precisely, into a participating crowd. Often, propaganda translates itself only into 'verbal action'... :but what matters is that the crowd pass from the state of being mere spectators filled with opinions to the state of participants." Jacques Ellul Propaganda the Formation of Men's Attitudes

This is the biggest concept that stood out for me in this book. Propaganda in short creates/leads to action.

"Even a movie-goer is 'taken' with a film. He has a personal opinion of the picture he sees. He will soon participate in public opinion about it, but that remains external. The spectator at a bullfight is in somewhat of a different situation; his participation in hte killing ritual is somewhat passive, but sometimes active-when he storms into the ring. Propaganda goes much further and demands an acceptance that is not active participation as a maximum... Only very rarely does opinion by itself lead to action. The great feat of propagand is to cause the progression from thought to action artificially."

I would love to keep this thread alive.
i don't think i understand what you are saying
“Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”
-- Hermann Goering

Propaganda has never been avoidable and never will be. The state has always used it to motivate the people to do what it wants.

An individual can free themselves from the effects of propaganda through acquiring knowledge. Once you know enough, you can see through the attempts to manipulate your thoughts. The problem is that this cannot be easily shared with others because those educated enough to see it are often those that will use the knowledge for the advancement of their own causes. So the journey is one we must all make for ourselves.

The biggest threat to Americans today comes from our common public education. While large parts of it are simple propaganda (like the Civics courses), the real risk comes from the fact that it does not properly equip the individual with the tools necessary to recognize and defuse propaganda. Public education is indoctrination. Free your mind by continuing your education yourself. Do not depend on others or schools to tell you what you need to know. Simply pick something that interests you and learn it. Then pick another topic. With time, you will know enough to see through all their attempts.
Did you get that quote from a Rage Against The Machine music video (possibly fan made)? 'Cuz its there. BTW I agree.
I first read the quote while pursuing some of my own interest in the Nuremberg Trials. It's from the notes of Gustave Gilbert, a psychologist & intelligence officer who was allowed to speak to Goering and other captured Nazis as they were being tried.

Unfortunately I cannot remember the book I first read it in but Snopes has an short write up about the quote and it's authenticity.
I think we've got an excellent example of propaganda happening right now.

The efforts of the Democrats to portray the Republican party as controlled by Rush Limbaugh are a blatant attempt to distract people away from legitimate criticisms of their proposals & programs. By saying that this one crazy radio personality is the guiding light of the party it discredits them without having to address any of their points.

The execution has been almost perfect because few people are questions why the Democrats are spending so much time on a radio personality.
OK, funny coincidence but I was telling a friend about this idea and he pointed me at an article on Politico about this vary topic.

Rush Job: Inside Dems' Limbaugh plan
Exactly....there are three sides to every story: my side, your side, and the truth.
I just started a bit of propaganda myself. I'm selling some great revolutionary style shirts on my new website....

-Wear Your Mind-
Starting some propaganda to promote the "red star" logo and the ideal of a bloody revolution?

Millions of people killed & hundreds of millions oppressed and that's your idea of the good thing?
Look here, I have been a strict pacifist my whole life and I have seen countless protests that changed nothing. Thomas Jefferson said "God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion." So now like many of you I am starting to contemplate our other options. I could quote founding fathers and important people all day about a serious revolution being our moral obligation and right but i wont. It's gone a little far to think the constitution can be reinstated in this country without someone's feeling getting a little hurt. So as crass as you think my shirts are, they are my tools to fight with. I love wearing them and having strangers approach me with their opinions. They instigate conversations about real issues. And that my friend, will get us where we want to be faster than the latest bailout of AIG by you, your children and your grandchildren.
