Simply giving out change to those who ask for it on the street can be a questionable act regarding the person's intentions on how they will use the money. some may use the money for food, others for substances less beneficial to their well being. (please note I am not saying giving out change is bad there is just the question of effect)
I would like this thread to be used to put forward simple ideas and methods that can be used to provide those on the street with materials that can help them in their situation. whether it be forms of encouragement, food, clothing, or the offer of shelter all ideas are welcome.
I'll start,
one thing that I have noticed a homeless person really appreciates is a good clean pair of socks. I will often buy a pack and stuff a few pairs into my backpack before I go downtown. If a homeless person asks for change I offer them socks and usually they welcome the gift.
Food is best thing I have ever given. I guess I prefer to give things as commodities instead of cash. Like how a hot sandwich and a cup a Joe is gladly accepted on a cold day no matter where you get it from. Socks are a good practical item I've never thought about, Nice one!
I have to agree with you here, I've always preferred giving something tangible, as opposed to cash. I used to carry a box of power bars in my car and gave them out all the time.
My dad gave a homeless man money once and I asked him "Well what if he uses the money to go score some coke?" and he says "Well if it helps him get that one last hit and it helps him feel better before he goes to bed then I'm willing to give him that money" He wasn't saying "Oh its okay to abuse drugs" but I really thought about what he said and its true. If the homeless person uses it on some beer, or some food or some drugs then so be it. Whatever eases that person's day right. I find giving them money is the best thing
