I need to get educated on all the issues. I haven't been keeping up with everything in a really long time, and I don't know where to find reliable information... but I would really like to dive into it all and start searching for something that I can commit myself to helping make a difference (if that made any sense. I couldn't word it any other way, its late... sorry...lol)

Anyone got any good sources they wouldn't mind sharing?

Please. Thank you.

I'm right there with ya.
Personally I listen to a lot of NPR. Also, I like to watch the Al-Jazeera English channel on YouTube.
Hey welcome to Fight with Tools! I have a couple of places I get information, but it really just depends on what you're interested in (I get overwhelmed trying to keep up with everything). CommonDreams.org has a lot of articles and essays, and they have a big list of resources on their home page. Alternet.org is good, as are Truthout.org and DemocracyNOw! I really like Yes Magazine to get a positive spin on all that's going RIGHT in the world--the places where we really are winning. http://www.yesmagazine.org/ I also like to keep up with Courage to Resist for inspiration. And I've learned a ton on FWT, too. One of the best things for getting active is reading the local paper and seeing what's going on in your community that you could plug in to. I'm a big fan of working close to home. Good luck!
Wow! THANKS! :]
I would recommend cultivating a wide variety of sources. Everyone will try to influence you to their opinion. No one is really impartial. If you want to know the truth then you need to cultivate a wide variety of sources. That way you can start to recognize the "spin" that various groups will add to the story and then you can start to see the truth behind it.

So the question is not so much what to read or listen to but how to organize your process so that you can get the most information quickly and efficiently. I'd recommend getting a good RSS reader (I like bloglines.com), and then sign up for the RSS feeds on sites like Fox, MSNBC, BBC, anything and everything you think might be interesting. Then you will be able to scan the headlines quickly for stories of interest and start to cross reference them across sources.
In my (limited) experience, the best way to get real information on what's going on is to look at what they want to put out there, and determine to what end their smokescreen is released.

I'd recommend reading pieces by Eric Hoffer, as well as pieces on how media can be used to manipulate individuals. Carefully reviewing that sort of information helps you understand why what you do see is out there. Combine that with hobby work in an emerging field (one they even mentioned the other day on NPR) called 'political intelligence', where the actions of legislators is monitored for it's potential impact on the economy, and you end up with a pretty good idea of what's going on.

If you understand how the manipulation is attempted, and understand where the money sits to be made and by who, pieces start falling into place. This really only works if you believe that the world is no longer about countries and ideologies, and more about conglomerates and cash. Then, as they said in the Rush Hour movies "Follow The Rich White Dude".

It can make you a paranoid cynic, though.

Regards,
Harley
What you said and the things that you referenced, kinda made me think of the movie Wag The Dog. If you haven't seen it, you should. Its all about media manipulation and faulty political intelligence.
