I've just started reading my good ol' buddy/bandmate's copy of "When Corporations Rule The World" by Daniel Korten, and already I've decided to cut red meat out of my diet. This book really helps me see things on a big picture level.
Has anyone else read it? nyone want to start a little online reading group? Could be cool...
I have not read it, but just read some excerpts from it online. Seems pretty interesting, I think I’ll pick up a copy.
On a similar note, (well kinda) I’ve been looking into investing in solar energy. From the research I have done, it seems to be the way to get us out of this energy crisis that we are in. It’s clean, and the building of solar panels, and wind farms will create jobs, and can replace lost jobs in places like Michigan, and Ohio.
Oh yeah, and I’m definitely down for a reading group.
I have not read that book yet, but it's definitely on my "plan to read" list. My birthday is tomorrow, can anyone say birthday money?? :-) Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism" was my big eye opener. Her writing is very detailed and factual, which I like.
I would definitely join a reading group as I'm always looking for new books to expand my knowledge base.
I'm interested, although I'm not sure how an online reading group works.
I've not heard about this book, but I already like the fact that it inspired you to stop eating red meat. I'm vegan, so if you need any motivation to continue down this animal-friendly path let me know!

I have not read it, but am planning to go out and get a copy today! I have actually participated in quite a few on-line reading groups and have facilitated a couple of the sessions myself. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help with this, I know you are on tour and busy! I find that reading a book is very fulfilling, but reading the same book as your peers and discussing it allows you to get so much more out of it.
Also, I am very excited for you that this book has inspired you to stop eating red-meat. I am vegan, not so much because I love animals (which I do), but because corporate farming is wrong and I will not put my money into something that I don't believe in. You may know that the beef industry is bad, but pork and chicken farming is just as bad, if not, worse!! If you need any information about these topics let me know.
Cat, i think it wold be great if you could help facilitate the group!! As you may have noticed, I let more than 10 days go by from my initial idea post to the followup post (this one!) so I'm probably not well-situated for facilitating. Plus I've never done it before!
So, let me know what you think makes sense. For now I'm going to post my thoughts at the end of this thread on what I've read so far...

I will gladly assist in facilitating this group, but I have a couple of questions/ideas about how to make it work better. Is there any other way we can run the discussion thread?? I wish that the newest posts came up first, rather than the other way. Also, to be clear, which edition of this book are we all reading?? I have the second edition, which is the newest edition, and it has a foreward/intro by Danny Glover. In the past, some of the groups that I participated in would have continuous discussions, but we would also try to all meet on-line for a live chat for one-hour every week. is anybody interested in this, and is there any way we can do this.
