My good ol' friend Stephen does this. I know because we're on tour together and we're usually roommates. I remember seeing something up a long time ago in a bookstore about how ridiculous it is to flush a gallon or two of water with a few ounces of urine. I agreed but did not change my behavior.
Why not? Social convention? Some sense of cleanliness?
Not sure, but now that Stephen does it, I usually do also. His doing it helps remind me, and also, I suspect, helps me feel more social support.
Does anyone have a similar story of something that you know is more reasonable in a world or limited resources, but you struggle to follow through on? What kinds of things help you succeed, or stand in your way?
my good gosh. this is very thought provoking concept. only because it makes you realize how easily it is for us to conform to behaviors and not really understand why?
i will think about it... and reply with some experiences....
I try to abide by this mantra at home. But in terms of sustainability as it applies to my life, I think that the decision not to drive to school every day was pretty odd to most of my classmates. Being a senior in high school, one is expected to have a car and drive to school mainly for the pure luxury of the act. I think riding the bus and carpooling are great alternatives and definitely less costly.
This is a very good rule of thumb - we do this in my household and my husband and I also take showers together to conserve water!! that may be TMI but hey I know somebody else out there does this as well! :)
ha cool idea :)
we used to throw away soda cans until my mom found a place where they give you money to take them for recycling and now we make money from drinking pop. haha its still helpful... right???

I find it outrageous that you threw away pop cans, lol...I'm from Michigan...we have pop (soda) recycling machines in every grocery store and most party (convinence) stores. Other places don't have this?

I have a hard time using a kitchen towel unless I am sure of where it's been. I really like paper towels, but I know they are easy to waste. I just like knowing that it's fresh...so I am rehabilitating myself. I am constantly forgetting to bring my reusable grocery bags to the store also! I confess!
lol, me and my roommate just did that, bought a bunch of cheap rags instead of wasting the paper towels. don't know how much it'll really help, but i like to think it does..
when we have gatherings. and use paper cups, we try to have our guest write their name on them with a sharpie or something of the sort, so they can reuse throughout the day.
hehe, Stephen does this? he doesn't seem like the type. i would imagine Seth or Andy doing this. lol. i also think its "If its yellow let it mellow, If its brown flush it down"
