So, not sure if im putting this in the right forums.

I want to start a group that isnt state or city based. But AMERICA based. I want to call it "The Other America". I was reading through some forums and heard someone mention that as a name and said it was something they could get behind...it really stuck with me. I hope you dont mind lol

Anyways..back on topic. Like i said, A nation wide group. I realize this will take a lot of time organizing things, no matter how small or big. And in no way do i intend to take away the events the other groups have going. Rather, I want to organize a large group of people to contribute to there local communities and bring us all together to help others rise up gain and give knowledge nation wide.

Just a few ideas i have to do this.

1. Silent Protest.
I am a firm believer that actions can be louder then words. You ever see those Truth.org commercials? For example and i forget the exact number of people, but they had the amount of people who die a year actually laying in the street outside a big tobacco company with signs with facts about smoking and the number of deaths it causes. People would walk by and read the signs, looking at the demonstration..therefor being educated. I like to think of this as a form of silent protest. A non-violent form of protest that educates people, while doing it in a way that sticks with peoples thoughts for all the right reasons. I want to do these for all kinds of events around the country, educating people about the things that our government does wrong, how people are mislead and how our country can be so much greater if things changed..even in simple ways. There are endless topics that can be brought up for this part.

2. We have voices, loudspeakers. and numbers. We can simply talk all day if need be. Wherever needed. to whomever passes by

3. Fliers, blogs..simply put..the internet. Its the largest fastest way to get the word out.

Im sure there are many more ways to do it, and thats the great part about it. There are endless possibilities for this from organizing teams for walks for diseases, to silent protest on just about anything.

Please..leave your feedback, if your interested. I would love to start this up, and when i get home, i will put all my effort into this. I want to see unity, and fellowship.

This America is not the America we cry for, The Other America's voice will be heard.

aight... sounds cool...
Hey there--Have you listened to the FLobots' song, Anne Braden? It talks about "the other America" and it's great. Not sure how you can find it since they don't have it up on the MySpace page, or at least didn't last time I looked. I'm sure it's out there somewhere on the internet, but that's not my speciality. Anyway, just what you're talking about is what we're trying to do on FWT. What city will you come back to from Baghdad? There might already be a group there. Like xwtf777... said, different groups are doing different things, but Denver's the most active since FWT got started here. We just finished supporting Iraq Veterans Against the War in a march during the DNC with 5,000 people calling to bring all the troops home from Iraq, fund veterans' benefits, and pay for the reconstruction of Iraq. It was very moving. Right now FWT is mostly working on voter registration, for a number of reasons, but soon we'll all get together and identify a unifying theme for all our work in the next year--in all the ways you mention. There's so much we can do together! We'll be here waiting for you when you get home. Sending lots of good vibes for your safety!
Thank you for the reply. I understand that that is the purpose. I will be coming back to cleveland, OH.

I guess my train of thought is hard to put into words. I know that the individual groups are already active. I think the way i mean to say it is that i want to be able to get the people who are able to travel, and get together with other groups together, Under a name that can be synonymous with Unified Group change
Oh, I think I see what you mean. This is so new, it's hard to know where it'll go, and it's hard to know where it'll fit into the bigger scheme of things. But I do hope we're building a movement that has room in it for lots of people to realize their visions of another America. Hey have you seen the www.americawillbe.org site? That might be closer to what you're talking about.

Gotta run to the library before it closes. Stay safe!
yeah...it is very new..thats why im so interested in this. Because its something that we can shape from the start. I want to be able to do this. I like the people here, very open minded, smart people, thats what i have been looking for.
Isn’t that what FWT.org is? We are a nation wide group. We are split up locally, but through this site we can communicate nationally.
that is kind of what fwt is, and then the subgroups in specific cities and areas
yes, but i do believe there should be a group that everyone who is able to travel and meet in other farther places can join
yes, but i do believe there should be a group that everyone who is able to travel and meet in other farther places can join
Yea i agree, but what pupose would you want it to serve, are you talking about like nation wide protests or actions like truth.org... or are you just talking about minor gettogethers with just a few ppl that are able to travel.. personaly i like the concept of multicity action, where at the exact same time ppl do things, like the laying down in the streets to object to the tobacco companies and such... but the organization is teadious.
yes thats exactly it, multicity action. Were, things can be protested, across the nation. Perhaps, filmed, edited and put together for a video.

Also, like i said before, it would be good for people who can travel farther maybe then instate, to meet up for things.
we are working right now to plan our national street team conference that will bring together representatives from all the groups all over the country (see the main page for details, january 2009). many of the things you all have mentioned are things we want to discuss at the conference.

one thing to keep in mind, traveling and large actions take time, organization and money. we are working on all of these things with limited resources so sometimes it feels like we are moving slower than I/we would like . .. . . BUT we WILL get there!!

we are focusing on voter registration now because this election is so huge and will deeply shape what our future work will look like. we also are constantly thinking through how to use our collective vision to make long term change in a new and inovative ways. we need the smaller groups to be on the ground in their own backyards just as much as we need to make sure we are clear about our overall goals and values as a whole. it's complex stuff .. . . . . but I agree, this is exactly what we are trying to do on FWT
