I've been getting comments from a lot of people(not on my profile, just in general) about the names we call ourselves and how those are portrayed. The name I hear most often is: insurgent.
Just FYI: insurgent = a person who takes part in an armed rebellion against the constituted authority...ie: the government.
Now usually this is in reference with trying to make it better than things were before with said government or constituted authority. Thats all well and good, etc, but not everyone is here for that reason. We want to make change, but a lot of people see rebellion as taking it a step too far. The way I see it, we want to make sure people are informed, and let them gather their own opinions and beliefs based on what's really going on instead of believing what propaganda dictates.
There are people I know who would like to become part of this, become more socially active, but when they see things that say "The New American Insurgents".....it makes them take the wrong thing away from it.
Personally, I like what Merc says about the name: technoamerican. It's a lot different, and it gives us our own identity rather than just being lumped together with rebels,...which I don't believe we are. I know fragglerocker was talking about how her town has the biggest army base in the world or something, and they weren't happy about the insurgents thing, etc....and I know where they are coming from based off of army and military officials here where I am in Denver.... Just my opinion. bash it if you'd like^^
Anyway, I know it has been awhile since I've posted (it's been HELL WEEK at work), but I just had to comment on this topic. "New American Insurgents" is a counter-intuitive phrase that stands to disenfranchise the whole purpose of our mission here on FWT. Read through our WakeUp and Code of Conduct topics and you will find that the basic goal is to promote public enlightenment and empowerment through open dialouge. This simple and clear initiative would be sullied by a term that incites armed rebellion. Now, I'm not knocking anyone who feels that "NAI" describes their personal ideals, but it is not a term that should be associated with this particular movement. I still stand behind my previous submission of Technomerican, but I implore all of you to continue thinking of other ideas. The whole purpose of our cause is open dialouge; all ideas are good ones. :-)
And Frag, I too have a past and since you so graciously shared yours with us, I want to share with you that fact that I was once addicted to several different forms of stimulant. I have since regained control of my life and have taken to stopping to smell the roses every once in awhile. ;-)
I meant no offense.....i know a lot of people that do that, but i tend to stay away.....i party clean.....same feeling without the after effects
Anyway....I think both New American Insurgent and Technoamericans are great names...Im more leaning to New American Insurgent, because to me its longer and has more of a presence....I asked people whats the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Technoamericans and most of them responded with geek or nerd....but when i asked New American Insurgent they mostly responded with: "TERRORISTS IN AMERICA?!"
......
A response i expected from Texans...
This is kind of my point in the term Technomericans (no "A"). We (you, me, and anyone reading this) share a unique bond that distinguishes us from the herd. We are united by our computers, our technological fluency, and our passionate desires to change the world by creating a better society. We don't accept the status quo. We believe that society can and should be enlightened. We strive to disperse knowledge and form intimate bonds with our brethren. We would like to see a world without fear and ignorance. People like us have been historically isolated from one another; by distance, by economic hierarchy, racism, or the most debilitative of all the limitations, ignorance. Our present state of technological evolution has begun to allow our species the ability to surmount these previously "impossible" shortcomings. We have been given a unique moment in history, and we must embrace this incredible tool for what it is.
Technology is the new democracy.
It is for this reason that I stand by my "labels" of Technomerican, Technomerica, Technocracy, Technocratic, and Technolution. We are the enlightened few on the crest of a great wave that is only just beginning to form. We must share the knowledge and the passion within us with as many people that will listen. We must seek means to reach those without the ability to hear. We must peacefully accept that there will be those that do not (or cannot) want to hear us. As Technomericans, we will not be thwarted by local unsuccess, we will have the support of our peers standing behind us, from all corners of the globe.
I just HAD to post about this, because I also feel that NAI is an extremely powerful phrase. The funny thing about words is that they are often misinterpreted and laid into contexts that they do not necessarily fit into. Our mass media began using the word insurgents to describe 'rebels' in Iraq... They were completely right in their statements as this use in full support of the recognized definition of the word. Where the word gets severely distorted is the way it began to be portrayed in political debates and the mass media displays that weaken our society. I give to you the worldwide accepted definition of the word "insurgent"...This is straight from Merriam-Websters Dictionary.
1: a person who revolts against civil authority or an established government; especially : a rebel not recognized as a belligerent
2: one who acts contrary to the policies and decisions of one's own political party
Now if it (and it is) our job to inform people what we stand for, then we must give them the true meaning of the words we use. It is not the WORDS themselves, but the PERCEPTION of words that we must challenge if we are ever to make a difference. I apologize if this comes across as aggressive, but it truly upsets me when the media and politians deliberately corrupt an accept definition of a word for their better gain and we never question it.
The very fact that the word has been distorted to project a negative connotation is the precise reason that we must avoid it. You and I know the true definition of the word, but we are already enlightened. If we are to expand and grow as a movement, we must attract more people that we repulse. Remember, our goal is inclusion, that means everyone even the people we are opposing. Insurgency may be part of our ideals, but it should not be our label. Just my humble opinion.
